This Statue of Hermes at Rest is a reproduction in bronze of the Roman period sculpture, dating back to around 79 BC, found in 1758, during the Excavations of Herculaneum, and today preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.

Hermes, in Rome he is known as Mercury, is the Greek god of messengers, travelers and traders. For the ancient Greeks, the spirit of passage and crossing was embodied in Hermes: they believed that the god manifested himself in any type of exchange or passage from one place, or from one state, to another.

It is for this reason that he was often linked to changes in man's fate and was one of the few to have permission to frequent the Kingdom of the Underworld.

Known for his speed and cunning, Hermes is often depicted in motion. Instead, this statue of Hermes at rest offers a rare vision of the deity resting on a rock, in a moment of tranquility.
