Big Pendant Coin of Naxos Tetradrachma, replica of an ancient Greek coin (about 460 B.C.).

The images and words engraved on the coins help to identificate the issuing authority, for example the poleis, the state, or the sovereign, under whose authority the coin was produced. In the Greek world, the most common image is a representation of the city's patronal deity. Naxos, the first colony founded by the Greeks in Sicila on the east coast, is the first city to mint money in Sicily. From the second half of the 6th century BC Dionysus, god of wine and orgiastic exaltation, was depicted on the coins minted in Naxos around 530 BC, to celebrate the God and the wine produced on the fertile slopes of Etna. The head of the god Dionysus is depicted on the front of the ancient coin. The reverse of the coin shows an ecstatic satyr (Silenus) with the erected member, a typical feature in ancient Greek art related to iconography of Dionysus. The engraving details the images to get them into the small space of the coin: the skill in the representation of muscle mass, facial expression and pointed ear is also remarkable.
