Crewneck T-shirt with short sleeves and the painting by Jannis Kounellis printed, 100% cotton.
Jannis Kounellis, Untitled, 1960, print on paper, cm. 150 x 150. Naples, private collection.
In 1958-59 Kounellis began to use the letters of the alphabet and numbers as the subject of his paintings. Painting with letters arises from the desire to consider language as an image and not only as a signifier. He shows his desire for freedom, for getting out the schemes of traditional aesthetics, to free oneself from the use of codified languages. Kounellis says: “I think of a possibility that is less linked to the structure of painting and is more free, as someone who is slowly becoming more and more free, becoming a bird, something else while the time is passing ..., something that has no sense but it is fantastic. ”One of his most famous exhibitions, in 1969, consisted of 12 live horses exhibited for a few days in one art gallery. The choice of horses refers to their historical-artistic connection with heroic paintings and equestrian statues. The work can be read as an extreme manifestation of the desire to produce an art that was linked to life. “What we need today is to achieve the unity between life and art” says Kounellis in 1968.
