Historical Curiosities

The Athena Lemnia is one of the most famous works attributed to Phidias, an ancient Greek sculptor. The sculpture, also known as "The Weight of Thought", depicts Athena in a moment of contemplation, capturing her strength and intelligence. This representation of Athena was originally located on the Acropolis of Athens, a symbol of divine protection over the city.

The clients were Athenian colonists from the island of Lemnos. The statue, which for this reason was called "Lemnia", had the function of an ex-voto, to ingratiate itself with the protection of the goddess, "patron" of Athens, during the colonizing enterprise.

The great novelty of the sculpture was Phidias' choice to depict Athena, usually presented in arms and ready for combat, in a non-belligerent attitude, standing, dressed in tunic and cloak, leaning on the spear and with the helmet in his right hand.

The Athena Lemnia therefore became the symbol of the supremacy of thought, and the monumental transcription of the political power and imperial dominance of the Athenian people.

Unfortunately, the original Phidian work has been lost, but it is possible to reconstruct its appearance using some stone replicas from the Roman era, which above all reproduce the head: the most accurate and faithful of these is the one preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Bologna, and made of Pentelic marble by a Greek sculptor of the Augustan period.

Maintenance

To keep your bronze statue always shining, clean it regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the finish. If you deem it necessary, use a little wax to restore shine to the work.
